I adore Windstar Cruises, and I recently had the pleasure of experiencing one of their 11-day cruises, which included 8 different Caribbean islands and 2 days at sea. To say that it was a respite is an understatement! Our last island was Martinique, and it was a bit uneventful – but that was a good thing. Because it was our last stop, we settled on little exploration and some beach time. Here is what we did!
I was invited by Windstar Cruises to enjoy their ship and write about my journeys. All opinions are my own, and this was my second journey with Windstar (the first was over a decade ago!).
The Island of Martinique
finding our sister ship
Our boat was the Star Pride, and in Martinique, it set anchor, so we took a tender boat to the port. We poked around a bit and then decided to board the ferry (I believe it is $7) to get a bit of a closer view of the area around the island. If you look close in the photos below, you will see not only our views, but you can see the Star Pride along with one of Windstar‘s other ships (the large one with sails). It was fun to meet another of the fleet along our journey.
finding the perfect souvenir
I’m terrible with directions, but I tend to be able to get around despite making missteps along the way. That actually happened to us in Martinique. When taking the ferry back (it has several stops), we got off at the wrong stop. It ended up being the best thing that could have happened to us.
After getting off at the dock, there were a few vendors set up selling their handmade wares. One lady took seeds from the island of Martinique and used them to make jewelry. I commissioned a bracelet to be made with my favorite seeds (there were furry ones and red ones…such a variety!), and I also had her make a keychain for our son. Be sure to take a peek at the video to see all she does. And the seeds are below for reference, too.
finding a lesser known beach
As my pieces were being made, the lady told us about the beach that was right off of the path. So, we could think of nothing better to do than to while away time exploring the beauty of Martinique’s beaches. It was so so perfect, and I believe the location was Pointe du Bout. The water was crystal clear, the palm trees created the perfect amount of shade, and the snorkeling was so interesting with fish and small crabs nearby.
We relaxed, swam, and snorkeled until it was time to – unfortunately – leave our last island. The video at the end is a bit long, but you can see the critters I mentioned. Oh, and if you are wondering about snorkeling gear…Windstar Cruises actually lends you gear (fins, snorkel, mask, and bag) through a sign out system for the duration of the cruise. That is such a nice, added touch!
We had a perfectly lovely time on Martinique, and I am thankful to Windstar for introducing us to such a beautiful place filled with memories. If you want to see some of our other stops, just click here.
