When I went to Portugal, I learned a lot about myself and about street art. Upon arrival, I was really taken back by the graffiti in Lisbon. Portugal actually had it in a lot of other places as it was also prevalent in Porto and a bit in Sintra. Nevertheless, I wrote about my experience with Lisbon graffiti here if you would like to hear my thoughts. But I want to show you how lovely the Miradouro Panorâmico de Monsanto was.

I didn’t fall in love with it immediately. In fact, it wasn’t until I took a Lisbon graffiti tour that I began to appreciate it. On two different days while with Traverse Journeys, we ventured out to observe the street art. I had my camera in hand and couldn’t stop snapping images! I want to show you the photos from the Miradouro Panorâmico de Monsanto.
Graffiti in Lisbon Portugal
It’s important to know a bit about the background of street art. If you look at the image below, it is meant to depict the revolution that happened in Portugal in the 1970s. Basically, the country had been under an oppressive dictatorship for years until there was an outcry and eventual revolution in 1974.
Many Lisbon graffiti artists turned to the medium as a form of self-expression. Afterward, creating street art caught on all over the country and continues to this day.

Our Lisbon Graffiti Tour
All of the art around the city truly led me to believe that there was a Lisbon graffiti problem. Honestly, many tourists are taken back by it when they first arrive. We had a full day of perusing Lisbon scheduled with We Hate Tourism Tours, which involved stopping at a long-abandoned restaurant, the Miradouro Panorâmico de Monsanto.
It was a circular structure that was filled with art. I took the time to photograph many of the Lisbon graffiti walls – they were so captivating! And in the end, you will see a few views from the former windows of the structure in Lisbon. Self-guided graffiti tours are possible, but I would truly recommend going with a guide. I do hope you enjoy my images below!

Have you ever traveled to a place that has an abundance of graffiti? I’d love to hear if so! I was recently in Dallas and adored the street art in Deep Ellum. It was so nice to be able to look at it and appreciate it.

This is my favorite piece of artwork that was in Miradouro Panorâmico de Monsanto. It’s made by blasting away part of the concrete, and it was so beautiful. Captivating, too! Be sure to notice the orb, which showed up in a few of my photos – interesting.

I did notice this whilst on a trip to Lisbon a few years ago, that the Portuguese love street art and the city is full of it. However I haven’t come across this place before. Some of the artwork looks horrible and done by young people who are bored but some of the artwork you have found is amazing, I really do love the art of the woman at the bottom of this blog post. The effort and time which has gone into this must have been a lot. I do love finding street art when I visit big urban cities around the world and you have truly found this here.
Ha, yes! It definitely does showcase a variety of skill levels for sure.
We love when we find street art when we travel. We saw a little when we were in Lisbon. But we missed a lot too. The colour and variety is interesting. I love when it is art and less tagging. The last piece at the Miradouro Panorâmico de Monsanto does look interesting. Fascinating that it was made by blasting the concrete.
I’ve been to Lisbon twice but I didn’t even know about this tour. It sounds like something completely different to normal. I’ll definitely have to check this out when I visit again!
Graffiti was a form of vandalism at first, but then it turned into a form of art and self-expression. I was taken back by it myself at first, but now it seems it has become a trend. In some places, it’s actually quite beautiful. I’ve never been on a street art tour before, but I’d love to go if I have a chance. The one in Lisbon seems quite interesting.
The graffiti in Lisbon enchants me as I truly love street art and so reading your post convinces me that Lisbon is a place for me. Graffiti really depicts self expression and I love to see self expression of all artists. Miradouro Panorâmico de Monsanto has wonderful mural art with so many colors though it is all concrete structure. All looks so beautiful and captivating.
I had the opportunity to experience some of this great street art on my trip to Lisbon last year and couldn’t agree more with your post. I didn’t not have enough time to take a walking tour but if I visited again would surely do this without a doubt. I would say it should form part of your itinerary in Lisbon and something that is not as widely promoted as part of your visit to this city. I was not aware the historic significance of street art and reading your post gave me an insight so thanks. Great post and visuals add life to it.
I have always loved some artistic graffiti and I had no idea about the ones in Libson, they actually look pretty sharp. I never knew they were so into it. I have visited Lisbon a few years ago and had no idea that this place existed. I would love to travel here in the future.
